We repeated the first part of the story time and then added a new book to match animals in the song.

Animals
Opening Song: Open, Shut Them

Every Week: Meet the Animals -laminated animals on board
Point to the animal on the flash card. Then you say the animals name (kitten, bear, bunny, bee) Also, draw your arm as a follow me gesture. (come w/ me) . Walk around to show each child the flash card and repeat the animals name and sound it makes.
Come on and take a walk with me-let's meet the animals!
I see a baby kitten-(what does a kitten say) Meow
I see a bear (what does a bear say) Growl
I see a bunny (what does a bunny do) they hop
I see a bee (what does a bee say) bzzz
I like my new animal friends, each and every one
because every week we will have so much fun!
week 1- Kittens

week 2: Bear
Finger play-stuff teddy bear & act out the parts
Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear, turn around.
Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear, touch the ground.
Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear, dance on your toes.
Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear, touch your nose.
Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear, climb the stairs.
Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear say your prayers.

week 3: Bunny
Finger play:
Baby bunny dressed in blue (Hold up two fingers like bunny ears)
Met another; then there were two. (hold up two fingers on both hands)
Bouncy bunnies to the left (Move fingers to left.)
Bouncy bunnies to the right (Move fingers to right.)
Bouncy bunnies get in bed (Put head on hands like sleeping)
Off to bed, you sleepy heads (pretend to sleep)
week 4: Bee
Finger play: laminated bee hive from toddler story time
Here is the beehive, where are the bees? (Hold two hands together.)
Hidden away where nobody sees. (Shake head no.)
Now they come creeping out of the hive:
One, two, three, four, five, buzzzzzz (Count out each finger, buzz, and fly.)

The families really like this song, I've been doing it for the last four weeks and the kids love to hear their name and the caregivers like to watch their kids' reactions - plus we get to focus on colors and patterns (stars, stripes, in place of colors).

Book: How Do You Make a Baby Smile? (with actions) by Philemon Sturges The kids liked pretending to be the animals, and I liked that it had both mothers and fathers in it.
Sing: Egg Shaker song (2X) (to the tune of Mary Had a Little Lamb) This is the way we shake our eggs Shake our eggs, Shake our eggs This is the way we shake our eggs Because it's fun to do. This was a big hit, and the older kids present wanted to do our opening preschool song, Shake Your Sillies Out, so everyone was up and shaking and dancing - fun! Book: Peekaboo! By Taro Gomi This might work better one on one, or as a focus book, because you want to be able to give the kids a chance to look through the eye holes instead of just the reader (parent or librarian). Will pick a different book next time. Bouncing rhymes: Jack be Nimble Jack be nimble, Bounce baby on knees. Jack be quick, Jack jump over Lift baby up. the candlestick.

The bouncing rhymes and action rhymes worked great to refocus the room and give that random energy an outlet....i.e. less books, more music and actions. :) Sing: Head and Shoulders, Knees and Toes (with music) We did it twice, so much fun! The older kids did it themselves, and the younger kids were dancing in place so the moms could point to their heads, shoulders...etc. Book: Story Time for Lamb Too slow for the kids. Will have to pick a better choice. Sing: If You're a Kitty and You Know It ...say meow ...lick your paws ...show your claws ...swish your tail This was fun for the preschoolers-K, but I think the youngest kids were done by then, ready for some free play.
Goodbye Song: The More We Get Together (traditional)
Free Play: balls, board books in basket, stuffed animals, blocks, egg shakers. We all played for another 1/2 hour, and I had a chance to visit with each parent and chat, as well as play with the kids individually and model the five practices. |

Welcome to Baby Time. Please participate as much as you can while we share rhymes, songs, music and books. If your child is not happy, feel free to leave and come back another time. We will be singing each song or rhyme two times so that your child can experience the repetition of the words.
