Stevenson School Library Turkish Curriculum Project 2012
We identified improving student writing as a school wide goal in our site plan. ELL and special education students also need support in all areas of literacy: reading, writing, listening and speaking.
With this goal in mind, I have developed curriculum for 3rd & 4th grade students (5 classes includes Special Education students) to research the country of Turkey.
I met with teachers to plan collaborative lessons about Turkey:
1. Background research (reading, writing, critical thinking, online research)
2. Turkish folktales (reading, writing, critical thinking, oral presentation)
3. Art Projects (critical thinking, arts production, writing, oral presentation
4. Science & garden projects (reading, writing, hands on inquiry learning, especially cooking, critical thinking)
5. Presentations Fall Farmer's Market
6. Student Reflections (critical thinking, writing)
Introduction Activities
Students began by comparing and contrasting San Francisco and California with Turkey, especially geography, climate, history using materials during weekly library visit. Students compiles this background information on Venn diagram charts. I collected a variety of age appropriate materials on Turkey, including print, non print, primary sources and digital resources.
In class and in the library, students worked with partners to read, discuss and share Turkish folktales. They wrote and presented short book talks to classmates. Each class will develop a rubric for book talks and use to give feedback for each presentation. Students will create shadow puppets (based on traditional Turkish puppetry) and present folktale puppet shows at the Fall Farmer's Market with our community garden. (Stevenson School community garden is on Pacheco & 34th Ave corner of school block and includes terrace/cactus area, 15 fruit trees, garden with redwood planters for several classes, irrigation and borders for front areas to prevent run off. Classes experience hands on projects & learn a variety of science and math lessons while gardening.)
Classes learned about the wealth of plant and animal life in Turkey. They developed charts, drawings, writing, garden journal and photos that will document the garden and the learning projects. Student compared San Francisco climate and determine what food plants found in Turkey could grow in our garden (eggplant, green pepper, garlic, onion, lentils, tomatoes). Classes are growing and harvest food plants. To prepare for the Fall Farmer's Market, students will read recipes from Turkey and prepare simple dishes (soups, vegetables with yoghurt, kabobs). (2 weeks)
Recipes and food tasting will be part of the the culminating project.
Our Farmer's Market is planned by the student service Green Team.
Classes browse at scheduled Farmers Market time. Students can bring 1-2 quarters for Farmer’s Market. (They can bring more money to donate to Red Cross) Students will be able to choose ONE Farmer’s Market activity. (25 cents). Students will be able to buy ONE raffle ticket. (25 cents)
Students will be able to participate: Turkish Folktale Puppet Show, Tasting a variety of Turkish recipes, Healthy Game with PE Teacher, Garden Tour with Garden Class students, Garden Chalk Mural.

a. Students know plants and animals have structures that serve
different functions in growth, survival, and reproduction.
