This workshop focuses on practical strategies for educators to develop meaningful service learning programs with students. Service learning emphasizes student empowerment and academic achievement and can be a tool in developing a student's lifetime commitment to service and social justice.

5 minutes Gallery Walk: Student service-learning display including calendars, rubrics, student projects, student created surveys, assets for students

15 minutes Introduction: Participants first will compile wall chart with what they know & what they want to know about service learning.

2^nd-5^th grade student service learning including

      1. Integration of academics with service

      2. Intentional learning with reflective writing & group discussion

      3. Student learning about larger social issues

      4.  Definition the “service” in terms of social, economic or educational justice instead of “charity”.  Participants will complete wall chart with what they have learned from presentation.

25 minutes Group Discussion: Group will develop working definition (with examples of cooperate rather than compete; complex problems in complex settings; real life problem-solving; habits of critical thinking; deeper learning) of service learning, define service learning components, tips and strategies for promoting youth leadership.
