MEMORY OF NIGHTMARES
Places and Primary Sources for Authentic Historical Knowledge
Who controls the past controls the future. Who controls the present controls the past. George Orwell
In a world filled with violence we must talk AND teach about hate. In the “Pyramid of Hate” bias leads to acts of prejudice, then discrimination, bias motivated violence & genocide.
How do we remember the past?
Do students believe what they read in textbooks?
Or do they explore historical ceremonies, images, architectures, monuments and primary sources to develop historical & cultural knowledge?
Learning at historical locations (in person or on line) brings the past into focus in an immediate, physical way. Primary sources are an exciting way for students to "touch history". As they examine photos, documents, letters, posters, diaries, maps and artifacts, students have an opportunity to interpret history!
A people without the knowledge of their past history, origin and culture is like a tree without roots. Marcus Garvey
