There is only one admirable form of the imagination: the imagination that is so intense that it creates a new reality, that it makes things happen.  Sean O'Faolain (1900 - 1991)

Five Strategies for writing successful grants

1.   Start with the budget  (Planning)

A well-planned budget reflects carefully thought out projects & activities.

Assess your budget

·      Enough budget detail & explanation?

·      Are costs reasonable?

·      Does budget match proposal activities?

·      in-kind & matching revenue

2.   Use what you know (Searching for data & resources)

What is the purpose of your grant?

What do you want?

Why it is important?

Who will benefit?

What are specific objectives to be accomplished & how?

How will results be measured?

Match project outcomes to specific measurable results.

3. Follow the rules (Writing & packaging a proposal)

First: Identify grant sources & look for a match between your project & the grant priorities.

Second: Read the guidelines carefully, & read them again & again!

Guidelines include: grant goals & priorities, award amount, eligibility, deadlines, format, budget, & who to contact.

Standard grant proposal components are: the narrative, budget, appendix of support material, & authorized signature.

Third:  Essential for grant writing: concise persuasive writing, & a reasonable budget!

Fourth:      Draft a timeline of project activities.

Fifth:      Be prepared to write several drafts.

Sixth:    Can you make the proposal deadline?  Be sure to allow the time to acquire a needed signature

If available, use technical assistance, including a review of proposal drafts. Contact the funding source about the status, evaluation, & outcome of your proposal.

4.   Don’t be afraid to shine (Submitting a proposal)

Who are you & how do you qualify to meet this need? Tell your story!

5.   Build on success - The Match Game (Follow up)

THE CRITICAL ASPECT OF ANY GRANT APPLICATION: DOES THIS PROJECT MATCH THE PURPOSE, & GOALS OF THE FUNDING SOURCE?

And then start writing that next grant proposal!

If your imagination leads you to understand how quickly people grant your requests when those requests appeal to their self-interest, you can have practically anything you go after.  Napoleon Hill

**Some grants will pay for part of supplies/project

As you begin planning for a grant, develop a description "snapshot" of your class.  School information & location, grade, number of students, demographics, special features, personality, learning abilities & challenges. Add your specific curricular programs & activities, teaching & learning areas that could use funds.

Sample descriptions I start with & then add or subtract parts of description depending on grant.

Located near the Pacific Ocean, R L Stevenson serves (number) K-5 students, including students who are recent immigrants, speak a language other than English at home, are in special education & gifted programs.   We have identified improving student writing as a school wide goal in our site plan.  ELL & special education students also need support in all areas of literacy: reading, writing, listening & speaking. Ethnic makeup of Stevenson includes % Chinese, other Asian, Other non white, Latino, African American, Other white American Indian & % declined to state.  % are eligible for free or reduced lunch.  % are designated Special Education & % are designated GATE.  % of the students are English Language Learners (ELL-LEP/NEP).

Located one block from San Francisco City Hall, Civic Center Secondary Court School, serves school students grades 7 through 12.  The goal at Civic Center is to change behavior so students will stay in school & earn enough credits to graduate.  Students from many areas of The City are provided with a middle & high school curriculum  Special Education students are identified as soon as they experience difficulty, allowing the focus to be on intervention rather than remediation. In 2013, for the first time, Civic Center has a school library program.

Located on a steep hilltop, Downtown Continuation High school overlooks a panoramic view of downtown San Francisco.  Students who have not been successful at traditional high schools find success & self motivation within rich academic settings.  Students have the opportunity to select a project that matches their own interests & learning styles:  language arts/literacy, mathematics, science, history/social science, world languages, & visual/performing arts. In addition Downtown High programs prepare students for the real world, building essential life skills. Service learning is an essential element of the Downtown High School.

Located in the sunny Mission, Hilltop Pregnant Minors High School serves students range from 14-18 & many are learning English as a second language. Young women can start at our school while they are expecting & continue after their baby is born. In 2013, for the first time, we are created a library at the school, a space that includes books & electronic resources for academics as well as pleasure reading for teenagers. We are also including a collection of bi lingual infant & toddler books so teen moms will be able to read to the little ones.
