DRAFT Youth+Voice+ Service
RISE program thru School Health Dept. https://www.healthiersf.org/Programs/SHP/Caminos/index.php
Refugee and Immigrant Supports in Education (RISE-SF) is charged with increasing access to education for all immigrant and refugee students through the promotion of culturally and linguistically inclusive programs and services.
RISE-SF offers advocacy, consultation, staff training, and coordination of student services in two primary focus areas:
Newcomer Programming:
Newly arrived refugee and immigrant English Language Learners have particular educational strengths and challenges that necessitate specific supports and programming. RISE-SF can support schools in implementing “best practices” for this community, and is available for phone or in-person consultations.
Sanctuary Education:
As a sanctuary school district, SFUSD upholds every young person’s constitutional right to feel safe and supported at school, and strives to expand the scope of sanctuary so all families feel seen and affirmed. RISE-SF can support schools in ensuring their communities -both students and staff- are aware of their rights and prepared to defend them.
As school coordinator of RISE-SF (the school health program that offers advocacy, consultation, staff training, and coordination of student services for Newcomer Programming & Sanctuary Education), I developed several youth voice & service learning programs. Working with counselors I developed grants for toiletries, sanitary & health items to give to students. This poster will describe eight programs: from international bookmark exchange to raising chickens!! Participating students become confident learners, effective communicators, connect with real world issues, and using their voices for resilience & empathy.

Youth voice & service learning are essential for ALL students including newcomers. Our school serves students in grades 7 through 12 and is located one block from the city hall. For these at-risk students with habitual truancy, behavior issues, and histories of suspension and expulsion, the goal is to change behavior so that these students will stay in school and earn enough credits to graduate. Supported by our school health department, our RISE program encourages student voice & service!
1. Define steps for student service learning
2. Explore local, national & international student service opportunities
3. Examine specific examples of student voice & student service learning
